Renfro Foods

When Fort Worth-based Renfro Foods needed to adjust their secondary packaging labeling process to comply with major retailer mandates, they called their long-time partner, ID Technology, to help them find a solution as well as increase their production.

ID Technology provides industry-leading labeling automation, coding, marking, and label production solutions for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, personal care, household, and industrial goods industries.

We excel at taking information and placing it on your products and packaging.

What was appealing to me about partnering with ID Technology is that they had solutions that were affordable and worked. You might think that's a no-brainer, but it's not. Our family business history is a long winding path. My grandfather distributed products to grocery stores in the 1930s, and in 1940, he and my grandmother started doing that out of their house. After about 12 years, they began making syrup in a factory, which is where I'm sitting right now in the original building. We got into taco sauce in the 70s, which thankfully led to salsa, and we became flavor innovators, creating things like Black Bean Salsa, Chipotle Corn, and Tequila Salsa in hot, medium, and mild varieties. Renfro Foods has been a customer of ID Technology for a couple of decades now.

Last summer, Renfro received a mandate to have labels on two sides of their cases, so they called me to explore different options. We had two major retailers tell us that they were going to start requiring two case stickers on different sides so they could scan them from multiple directions. This is why we partnered with companies like ID Technology. I believe in hiring experts when you have a problem and implementing their solutions. Their previous label was three and a half by seven inches long with a rotated barcode, which was a challenge due to the speed of their production line. They wanted to increase their production line speed, so ID Technology showed us a solution with a new machine—two machines on either side of the line that apply two case stickers.

Renfro was able to get a lot more labels per roll, with clearer barcodes, and they could go faster. ID Technology provided the technology, showed us when things changed, helped us upgrade, and trained our people with train-the-trainer sessions. They provided the product, which is extremely critical since we can't ship products without the case sticker with accurate information on it. I hope that we don't eventually have to put four stickers on a box, but if we do, I know who to call.
